About this case

Varinka is in her 50s and has been suffering for many years with soreness, pain and discomfort during meals, up to the point that it affects her mood and social life. She has already consulted many professionals. Finally she came to Dr Defrancq’s office. Indeed, Varinka had a major problem since there was an extreme atrophic upper jaw with no bone left over. I offered her the choice between zygomatic implants (4) or a bony reconstruction of the upper jaw and four months later placement of regular implants.

She opted for a bone graft, if I could assure her a same final fixed result. A posterior hip graft was taken. This area provided us with lots of bone, with excellent recovery, since next day Varinka left the hospital in normal walking condition, practically without pain. The bone was placed in the bottom of the sinus (sinus lifting procedure), and then around the vestibular surface of the upper jaw. In the lower jaw, the teeth were extracted, the bone levelled and the implant placed as well. In the lower jaw Dr Defrancq made her – within the following week – the final superstructure in gold resin. Her upper prosthesis was readapted in that same week.

Four months later the implants were placed and three months later the porcelain construction was realised by Dr Defrancq. It was finally a “dream come true” experience for Varinka giving her back the comfort and the confidence in eating and living.
